Abstract:

Computer education environment in Konan University

In Konan University, each building is connected by FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) of 100Mbps. It is connected to the Internet via ORIONS (a network provider only for scientific use), and a commercial provider UUNET. And in Education and Research Center for Information Science (KERCIS), PC clients are connected to the servers by high-speed Gigabit Ethernets. Fujitsu's AP3000 is one of our main servers, in which 16 nodes are connected via a high-speed network called AP-net, and working as various servers. In addition, domain controllers and file servers are running on Windows 2000 based machines.
Over 150 wireless-LAN access points have been installed so that the students can connect to the network everywhere on the campus from the laptop personal computers. Carrying a laptop personal computer by every student is currently recommended by our university (S-net plan). Also, an infrastructure is constructed so that the student can access and retrieve information about the lessons or submit the reports from his/her home.
Lately, the No. 5 building is constructed with a concept called "multimedia study zone". The students can freely go into or out of the building. With a laptop PC, they can utilize various information resources outside or inside the university for study. In order to realize the concept, the newest network equipments and servers are introduced into the building, and "High Security LAN System" has newly been built for keeping the security of the information wall sockets and the wireless LAN access points.
